William was born in March 1860 in Little Lever.1  William's father was John Jenkinson and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Brooks and Margaret Mather. He had four brothers named Daniel, James, Joseph and Roland.  He was the third oldest of the five known children.
