James was born in September 1858 in Little Lever.1  James' father was John Jenkinson and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Brooks and Margaret Mather. He had four brothers named Daniel, William, Joseph and Roland.  He was the second oldest of the five known children.
