William's father was John Isherwood and his mother was Alice Brownlow.  His paternal grandparents were Christopher Isherwood and Jane Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James, Jonathan, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
