William was born in 1833 in Tottington and his baptism took place on January 6th, 1833 at St. Anne (Turton).1  William's father was John Isherwood and his mother was Alice Brownlow.  His paternal grandparents were Christopher Isherwood and Jane Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James, Jonathan, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
