Mary was born in 1820 in Tottington and her baptism took place on October 22nd, 1820 at St. Anne (Turton).1  Mary's father was John Isherwood and her mother was Alice Brownlow.  Her paternal grandparents were Christopher Isherwood and Jane Greenhalgh. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Jonathan, William, Sarah, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth and Alice.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
