James' father was John Isherwood and his mother was Alice Brownlow.  His paternal grandparents were Christopher Isherwood and Jane Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Jonathan, William, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
