Alice's father was John Isherwood and her mother was Alice Brownlow.  Her paternal grandparents were Christopher Isherwood and Jane Greenhalgh. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Jonathan, William, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Jane and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
