Mary's father was Edmund Howarth and her mother was Margaret Wigglesworth. Her paternal grandparents were John Howarth and Ann Howard. She had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Jane. She was the second oldest of the three children. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Ann, Lawrence, Alice and Ann.
