Joseph was born in March 1711 in Lower Darwen and his baptism took place on March 9th, 1711 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).1  Joseph's father was Giles Howarth and his mother was Mary Yates.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and <unknown>. He had eight brothers named Richard, Edmund, James, Thomas, John, Benjamin, Henry and Gyles.  Joseph and Benjamin were twins.
