John was born on January 1st, 1709 in Lower Darwen and his baptism took place on January 1st, 1709 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).1  John's father was Giles Howarth and his mother was Mary Yates.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and <unknown>. He had eight brothers named Richard, Edmund, James, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Henry and Gyles.
