Joseph was born in 1844 in Walmersley.1  Joseph's father was William Howarth and his mother was Jane Booth.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. He had a brother and five sisters, named William, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Alice and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the seven known children.
