Elizabeth was born in 1834 in Tottington.1  Elizabeth's father was William Howarth and her mother was Jane Booth.  Her maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, William, Mary, Hannah, Alice and Jane.  She was the third oldest of the seven known children.
