John was born in 1782 in Harwood and his baptism took place on October 27th, 1782 at Bradshaw Chapel.1  John's father was Thomas Holt and his mother was Ann Isherwood.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Holt and Ann Meadowcroft. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, George, Alice, Ann, Esther, Mary and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
