James was born in 1780 in Harwood and his baptism took place on May 7th, 1780 at Turton Chapel.1  James' father was Thomas Holt and his mother was Ann Isherwood.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Holt and Ann Meadowcroft. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, George, Alice, Ann, Esther, Mary and Jane.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
