John was born in September 1863 in Little Bolton.¹

John's father was George Hampson and his mother was Hannah Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Hartley. He was an only child. He died at the age of 83 on October 4th, 1946 in Little Bolton. His burial was in October 1946 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²
