John was born in June 1795 in Turton and his baptism took place on September 4th, 1795 at St. Anne (Turton).1  John's father was John Hamer and his mother was Mary (Mally) Bury. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Benjamin, Ann, Alice, Sally, Rachel, Betty, Nancy and Jenny.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 61 in December 1856 in Bolton.  He was buried on December 14th, 1856 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
