William was born in 1842 in Westhoughton.1  William's father was Thomas Greenhalgh and his mother was Mary Grundy. He had a brother and six sisters, named James, Catherine, Margaret, Alice, Mary, Catherine and Rebecca.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1843 in Westhoughton.1
