Catherine's father was Thomas Greenhalgh and her mother was Mary Grundy. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Catherine, Margaret, Alice, Mary and Rebecca.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.  She died in December 1858 in Bolton.²
