John's father was William Henry Greenhalgh and his mother was Mary Ann Shaw. His paternal grandparents were Squire Greenhalgh and Esther Isherwood. He had six brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Joe, West, Frank, Thomas, Mary, Alice, Elizabeth, Mary and Nellie. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
