John was born in 1831 in Harwood.1  John's father was John Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Bridge. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ellis, Richard, Stephen, Hannah, Leah and Susan.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
