Stephen was born in 1828 in Harwood and his baptism took place on April 6th, 1828 in Bolton.1  Stephen's father was John Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Bridge. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ellis, Richard, John, Hannah, Leah and Susan.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
