Ellis was born in 1822 in Harwood.1  Ellis' father was John Greenhalgh and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Bridge. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Stephen, John, Hannah, Leah and Susan.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
