John was born on June 23rd, 1798 in Berry Brow and his baptism took place on July 18th, 1798 in Highfield (Independent).1  John's father was Matthew Gledhill  and his mother was Susannah (Susy) Dawson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named James(?), Benjamin, Matthew, Nathan, Joshua, Luke, Esther and Nancy.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 85 in September 1883 in Huddersfield.2
