John was born in March 1847 in Bolton.1  John's father was Abraham Fitton and his mother was Jane Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Catherine Rawsthorn or ROSTRON. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Robert, James, Thomas, Ann, Betsy and Mary.
