James' father was Abraham Fitton and his mother was Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Catherine Rawsthorn or ROSTRON. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Robert, Thomas, Ann, Betsy and Mary. James and Thomas were twins.
