Elizabeth's father was James Fairhurst and her mother was Anne Lewis. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Lewis and Elizabeth Williams. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, James, Louis, Peter, John, William, Mary and Ann. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
