John's father was Thomas Eddowes and his mother was Martha Jones. His paternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Elizabeth Jones. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas, James, Charles, Henry and Elizabeth. He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children. He died at the age of 40 in January 1872 in Tonbridge.³
