John was born in December 1855 in Wrexham.1  John's father was George Eddowes and his mother was Mary Jones.  His paternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Mary Whitfield. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Arthur, Edwin, Elizabeth and Emma.  He was the third youngest of the six children.2
