Amelia was born in 1860 in Kearsley.¹

Amelia's father was Thomas Dawson and her mother was Martha Millington. Her maternal grandparents were John Millington and Harriet Whitworth. She had five brothers and a sister, named Peter, Jacob, Amos, Moses, Albert and Charlotte. She was the third youngest of the seven children.
