Albert's father was Thomas Dawson and his mother was Martha Millington. His maternal grandparents were John Millington and Harriet Whitworth. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Jacob, Amos, Moses, Amelia and Charlotte. He was the youngest of the seven children.
