John's father was Robert Davies and his mother was Anne Daulby. His paternal grandparents were John Davies and Ann Whitfield. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas, Arthur, Anne, Elizabeth, Esther, Maria and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
