Benjamin's father was Joseph Davies and his mother was Jane Williams. His paternal grandparents were John Davies and Ann Whitfield. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Meredith, John, William, Thomas, Robert, Ann and Polly. He was the second youngest of the eight children.
