Samuel's father was Daniel Daulby and his mother was Maria Davies. His maternal grandparents were John Davies and Ann Whitfield. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Daniel, Sarah, Mary, Maria, Louisa, Elizabeth, Margaretta and Esther. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
