Ruth's father was James Cunliffe and her mother was Maria Hall. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Daniel, William, Joseph, Joseph, Benjamin, Ellen, Sarah and Rachel.  She was the youngest of the ten known children. She had four half-sisters named Betsy, Alice, Susanna and Mary.
