Joseph was born in 1837 in Little Bolton.

Joseph's father was James Cunliffe and his mother was Maria Hall. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Daniel, William, Joseph, Benjamin, Ellen, Sarah, Rachel and Ruth.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten known children. He had four half-sisters named Betsy, Alice, Susanna and Mary.  He died at the age of 4 in 1841 in Little Bolton.¹
