James was born in 1785 in Darcy Lever. James' father was William Crook and his mother was Alice Aldred. His paternal grandparents were John Crook and Margaret Sharples. He had five brothers and a sister, named Daniel, William, Joshua, Thomas, Samuel and Elizabeth. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
