John was born in 1851 in Saddleworth.1   John's father was George Carter and his mother was Mary Buckley.  His paternal grandparents were William Carter and Betty Stancliffe; his maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Alice Rhodes. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Frederick, Edward, George, Daniel and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
