Daniel's father was George Carter and his mother was Mary Buckley.  His paternal grandparents were William Carter and Betty Stancliffe; his maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Alice Rhodes. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, John, Frederick, Edward, George and Mary.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 53 in March 1920 in Saddleworth.²
