John's father was William Campion and his mother was Ann Lewis.  His maternal grandparents were James Lewis and Bridget Nowland. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, James, William, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 3 in 1859 in Neston.²
