Abner was born on November 10th, 1793 in Saddleworth and his baptism took place on December 15th, 1793 in Oldham.1 2  Abner's father was Benjamin Buckley and his mother was Elin (Nelly) Bottomley. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Cornelius, John, John, Sarah and Hannah.

‌Abner and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on May 25th, 1815 at St. Marys (Oldham).3   They had three sons and two daughters, named Benjamin, Josiah, John, Sarah and Betty.  There are no more children.
