Mary was born in 1862 in Bolton and her baptism took place on September 21st, 1862 in Salford.1 2  Mary's father was John Brooks and her mother was Ellen Parkes.  Her paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Hannah Rothwell. She had three brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Edith, Annie and Florence.  She was the oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named William.
