James' father was John Brooks and his mother was Ellen Parkes.  His paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Hannah Rothwell. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Mary, Edith, Annie and Florence.  He was the second oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named William.
