William was born in 1886 in Broughton (Salford).1   William's father was John Brooks and his mother was Margaret Simpson.  His paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Hannah Rothwell. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Mary, Edith, Annie, Florence and Maggie.
