May was born in 1888 in Failsworth.1  May's father was Thomas Brierley and her mother was Mary Bolton.  Her maternal grandparents were Richard Bolton and Maria Aspinall. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Abraham, Benjamin, James, Lily and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children.
