Lily's father was Thomas Brierley and her mother was Mary Bolton.  Her maternal grandparents were Richard Bolton and Maria Aspinall. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Abraham, Benjamin, James, Mary and May.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at 2 months old in September 1871 in Ashton-under-Lyne.²
