Mary was born in 1880 in Failsworth.1  Mary's father was Thomas Brierley and her mother was Mary Bolton.  Her maternal grandparents were Richard Bolton and Maria Aspinall. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Abraham, Benjamin, James, Lily and May.  She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
