Walker was born in September 1844 in Stalybridge.1  Walker's father was William Boothroyd and his mother was Mary Winterbottom. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Wright, Orlando, Henry, Leigh, Sarah and Bertha.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
