Leigh was born in December 1857 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  Leigh's father was William Boothroyd and his mother was Mary Winterbottom. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Walker, Wright, Orlando, Henry, Sarah and Bertha.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 23 on September 3rd, 1881 in Stalybridge.  He was buried in Stalybridge.2
