Mary's father was Jonathan Booth and her mother was Eliza Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Bold (Bould) Mather and Margaret Taylor. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Jonathan, Frederick, Margaret, Anne, Eliza and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the seven children.
