Mary's father was Richard Birchall and her mother was Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Margaret Arrowsmith. She had a brother named William. She was the older of the two children.

- 31 Dec 1930, Mary (29) married Harold Clifford Ainsworth (27) at the Adlington, St Philip´s Protestant Mission.
  
  In 1939, Mary and Harold continued to live near Ridings farm at 16 Railway Road. Her father and brother William kept Ridings (dairy) farm.
  
  By 1939, they still had no children.
