John was born in September 1840 in Clifton and his baptism took place on March 10th, 1841 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1 2  John's father was Thomas Benyon and his mother was Mary Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, William, Robert, Joseph, Charlotte, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
